Lately, I’ve been feeling more and more like Erdener Abi. Due to increased intensity and fatigue, I’ve lost my connection with the outside world. I’ve found myself giving one-word answers to questions, and the latest instance was with dear Uğur. He recently wrote an article on Bildirgeç. As always, he sent it to me. A link arrived via MSN; I clicked, opened it, glanced at the title, took a look at the content, and gave a one-word response: Stalemate.
This topic has actually been a significant agenda item in the marketing world and our industry’s discussions for the past few years. There was even a book written about it (although it occasionally smelled of sponsorship, it was an enjoyable and well-done work). Uğur’s article seems to have sparked quite a bit of debate. Many people have chimed in under the article, listing reasons why it won’t happen, complaining about the lack of support, questioning why it shouldn’t happen, predicting what will happen in the next 10 years, criticizing the mediocrity of the article, and even getting into personal arguments.
Unfortunately, I don’t agree with the real-life examples Ufuk provided. I don’t believe we have a world-renowned brand, even in traditional sectors (those who mention Beko, please leave the site immediately). Having discussed the topic in depth many times before, delving into reasons and consequences, I’m thoroughly tired of these arguments. Even hearing about the subject makes my stomach turn. Perhaps that’s why I gave a one-word answer.
If we were to make a list of the reasons, believe me, pages wouldn’t be enough here. But I won’t even attempt to do that. As I said, I’m tired of this topic, I apologize. Unlike many hopeful friends, I am pessimistic about this issue. For those who insist on reasons why it won’t happen, let me write the two most important items of everything I will mention, and let’s never return to this topic:
Until when will there be no global brand from these lands?
1- Until we become a society that produces rather than consumes
2- Until everyone does what they know best
